Labour pull the plug on swimming in Clapham

Labour Lambeth has closed both Clapham and Streatham Leisure Centres, a move which reduces by 66% the available council-run swimming pools in the borough – only Brixton pool remains. The closures follow over 3 years of prevarication and delay as Labour dithered over refurbishment plans. Lambeth plan to demolish Clapham Pool later this year. Glyn commented: “Only Labour Lambeth would shut down swimming pools in the run up to the 2012 Olympics”.

By the Council’s own admission, alternative facilities will not be available in Clapham until November 2011and that is dependent on a redevelopment scheme which has been plagued with uncertainty and delays.

Four years ago Labour promised to “Keep Clapham Swimming”, but axed the building of a new swimming pool on a different site agreed by the previous administration which would by now have been open with no break in service to residents. Instead, they opted for a scheme which required demolishing the current pool and depriving residents of a local swimming for at least 22 months. “Why are they so keen to close our pools down?” asked Glyn.
